Concessions to fighters are the mistake of the power adjoining on a crime

The power from the very beginning had to react rigidly to actions of fighters on the Grushevsky Street —the known Kiev historian and the publicist, the author of the book «Russia non-Russian» Alexander Semenovich Karevin answers the questions of «The world and we».

— What role in escalation of the conflict and a situation aggravation in Ukraine is played by nationalist opposition parties?

It is obvious that not the nationalist forces play a leading role in emergence and existence of Euromaidan such as All-Ukrainian Union «Svoboda» and, of course, not «Batkivshchyna» and «Udar». For all this, generally there are Ukrainian «eurointegrated» oligarchs. In itself these parties in general are impotent and aren’t of great importance without oligarchs — their role completely subordinated. It is clear that occurring events are favourable to them and in the spirit of their aspirations, but their role is not the main here.

If the power behaved correctly, these parties and their owners never could aggravate such situation in the country. The main problem is not in these nationalist parties, but in the power and, specifically, in Victor Yanukovych who behaves absolutely inadmissible. It isn’t known what is more in actions of the authorities— nonsense or cowardice, but because of it the disorders under the general name «Euromaidan» proceed in Kiev which for a long time it was possible to finish. And, not obligatory by power method — it was enough to bring an order on television. But, unfortunately, it doesn’t occur. Meanwhile, the television in much bigger degree, than political parties, shakes a situation in the country. Therefore the main responsibility for such situation lies on the power. In this situation Yanukovych reminds me Gorbachev of a sample of the 91st year. And all of us remember what it ended for our country.

— What do you think of naked intervention in internal affairs of Ukraine in connection with the Euromaidan from the western states?

Certainly, such intervention from the western countries happens, but it is absolutely inadmissible. But their role isn’t decisive and it wouldn’t have special value if the power resolutely stopped all this. And now occurs such that our ambassador is hauled up «on the carpet» by any Latvia to demand the report what occurs on Maidan. And only after Yanukovych agreed with Putin, the statement that it is bad to interfere with our internal affairs was made. But if the power accurately put these diplomats into place at once, insisted that it is impossible to interfere with our internal affairs, all these shameful situations wouldn’t arise for Ukraine. Certainly, the western countries would continue Euromaidan financing, but such value their representatives never would receive.

— Can Euromaidan lead to split of Ukraine?

Certainly, the split is possible also in the becoming aggravated situation. But once again I insist that in Maidan can’t do something by itself. This is the herd of «rams» — where they will be driven, there will go. The main problem is not in Euromaidan, but in policy of our power. After all it was possible to adduce detailed arguments why the agreement on association wasn’t signed with EU, why it would lead Ukraine to inevitable accident through the same television. And then there would be no such wave of protests. It is sure, that even in the Western Ukraine though the part of the population is poisoned to some extent with a virus of «national knowledge» there, the majority of people, having seen that such agreement will hit directly their pocket, never would support it and Euromaidan. Therefore the power is able to prevent any split if, of course, it works instead of staying in prostration now.

— For what reason, in your opinion, the authorities didn’t undertake resolute actions against disorders in Kiev? Probably because the notorious policy of multiple view remains and Yanukovych hoped for support from Europe?

Yanukovych refused multiple view policy when decided to sign the agreement on association with EU and started pulling the country towards the West. Eventually, he was explained what it will end for him personally — with unambiguous loss of the power. After that he started «maneuvering» and again returned to «multiple view» of policy. This policy is silly and absolutely unworthy for the country. It is obvious that the most true and favorable will be the course on integration with Russia — it is necessary both for Ukraine, and for Russia. But, unfortunately, there are oligarchs to whom the European way of movement of Ukraine is favorable. It caused maintenance of disorders on Maidan.

— How do you estimate the events on the Grushevsky Street and actions of the authorities in this situation?

Fighters on the Grushevsky Street don’t listen to so-called «leaders of opposition» for a long time. Neither Klitschko, nor Yatsenyuk, nor Tyaghnybok are the authorities for them. But, nevertheless, the opposition continues to support fighters, but already secretly. If fighters win, the opposition will tell that it is our people. If they lose, will declare that it were provokers. Therefore now the opposition waits what will be farther.

It was obvious from the very beginning that the power had to stop this performance rigidly. Force should be used when the cobble-stones were used and to apply the most rigid methods. That the power doesn’t do it is the inadmissible mistake adjoining on a crime.
