Peacekeeping operation in the Dniestr is one of the most successful in the world!

Bashkan of Gagauzia Mikhail Formuzal, known for the accurate position of preservation of Moldova statehood and sharply opposing the plans of unionists on association with Romania, speaking about the twentieth anniversary since the carrying out of peacekeeping operation in a zone of the Moldavian-Dniestr conflict, evaluated it highly:

- The peacekeeping operation in the Dniestr is one of the most successful in the world. If to lay aside the ideological statements of some politicians on this subject and to look only at the facts, we can ascertain the following: the peacekeeping contingent operated within the mandate during 20 years of work, managed to prevent the development of armed conflict and provided the safety in the region.

During the presence of peacekeepers in the region there was no victim of the conflict among the peace population; the Russian military personnel has unconditional authority and respect among the region population. It won't be the exaggeration if to say that the peacekeeping operation in the Dniestr is one of the considerable foreign policy successes in the contemporary history of Russia.

20-year anniversary of input of the Russian contingent in a safety zone of the Dniestr conflict is an occasion to remember the one, informal and, owing to this fact, peacekeeping operation less known today. In 1990, in two years prior to the Dniestr tragedy, the similar situation developed in the south of Moldova, in just formed Gagauz Republic. When the prime minister of the country Mircea Druc organized the volunteers’ march to Komrat, all Gagauz people protected the land.

Then the large-scale bloodshed was prevented by timely input of armies of the Bolgrad division under command of general Oleg Babich and in some days and the armies of the Ministry of Defence of the USSR under the command of general Anatoly Zaytsev on Gagauzia's territory on October 26. The decision on armies input on Gagauzia's territory was accepted at local level and it is necessary to pay tribute to will and determination of military officers who, having estimated a situation, charged themselves with responsibility to operate without waiting the official order from Moscow. Thanks to operative actions and also the brotherly help of the Dniestr volunteers, it was possible to prevent the armed conflict and to rescue thousands of peace lives.

Those who prejudice the value of activity of the Russian peacekeepers, prejudice the value of the saved lives of those years. This sort of statements is directed against the safety in the region and, certainly, work for a distance of two coast of the Dniestr. In this context the efforts of civil society of Moldova, Transdniestria, Gagauzia and Russia get special importance, directed on the objective reporting of the history of the Dniestr conflict and a peacekeeping role of the Russian military men.
