War after the Great Victory: who prevented the memory of “the iron general”?

Frankly speaking, the company on eradication of memory of the Great Patriotic War, which developed on open spaces of the former Soviet Union or more exactly in the territory of the former union republics, makes us thinking. It makes us thinking not only over for what and for whom it is necessary; it also reminds us of those people in honor of whom once were put the monuments and today try to bury in oblivion their names.   One of the vivid examples is the story of monument transferring to the general Sabir Rakhimov in Tashkent. What it was the person whom the Supreme Commander in Chief Joseph Stalin named “the iron general” and why the unique general of times of the Great Patriotic War from Uzbekistan has to be out of favour with the authorities of this country today …   Sabir Umarovich Rakhimov has come to the Worker’s and Peasant’s Red Army as the shepherd. In three years has graduated from Baku military school. Then served in Turkestan district, was at war with the basmatches. He was repeatedly wounded and was awarded with the order of the Red Banner for bravery.   He has met the Great Patriotic War already as the major, was at war on the Western and Southern fronts. On the autumn 1942, he became the commander of a division and was at war on Don, Kuban and defended the North Caucasus. In March of 1943 year he was given the rank of the major general and sent to the capital for study in General Headquarters Academy. Then he was again on front. And here the commander of 37th Guards Rechitsky rifle division twice Red Banner of awards of Suvorov of the second degree, Kutuzov of the first degree, Bogdan Khmelnitsky the first degree directs over storm of the strengthened fortress of Graudenz. One of the violent fighting has inflamed on March 26, 1945. The major general Rakhimov was on observation post and directed over the fight. The heavy shell which has been let out from one of the enemy ships has got in NP. The general has been mortally wounded and has died in hospital, without having recovered consciousness.   The well-known our military leader, the Hero of the Soviet Union, the general of army Ivan Fedyuninsky has remembered Sabir Rakhimov in his memoirs. Here is a fragment from his book "Raised on alarm", published in 1961:   “Thanks to you for your fighting work”, I have answered. “Only it is vain, you, the companion Rakhimov, always aspire to be indispensable in fighting usages. Everybody appreciates your bravery but you are a commander of a division, you need to lead the fight, instead of to lift the regiments to attack. We have warmly said goodbye. I had no chance more to see this worthy son of the Uzbek people. On March 26, Sabir Rakhimov died a hero’s death in several kilometers from Danzig”.   Rakhimov really always tried to be near to the soldiers and didn't hide in back. His military talent, courage and firmness were universally recognized. Not without reason Stalin named him “the iron general”.   Sabir Rakhimov was buried in Tashkent. The monument was raised – a four-meter monument on a two-meter pedestal is visible from apart. The monument has been put also in Samarkand, a name of the general has been appropriated to one of the districts of the capital of Uzbekistan, to the station of the Tashkent underground and to the academic lyceum attached to the University. The streets in Tashkent and Urgench and also school, station and state farm were named in his honor. The books told about Sabir Rakhimov: “Heroes of the Soviet Union are the citizens of Uzbekistan” (Tashkent, 1984) and "Feat" (Tashkent, 1980).   Kazakhstan honored memory of the general too who was the Kazakh by a nationality. The streets in Alma-Ata, Taraz, Shymkent were named in honor of Sabir Rakhimov. In Shymkent the republican boarding school (Suvorov Military School) was named by the general. And in 2004 the monument was established there.   The bust of the general was established in the capital of independent Azerbaijan in the territory of Baku Higher Military General Command School (that military school where Sabir Rakhimov once studied).   In Poland in 1966, the trawler "General Rakhimov" has been floated on Gdansk shipyards. It would seem, that it is worthy memory to the person whose destiny is connected with four sister republics and to whom in 1965 the rank of the Hero of the Soviet Union has posthumously been appropriated. But there was no Soviet Union and was found out that this part of history as our children say, "is not considered" for somebody.   We have told, how the memory of "the iron" general was immortalized. And here is the chronology of destruction of this memory.   Though on a site of the Baku Higher Military General Command School by the name of the Supreme Council of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic is told about Sabir Rakhimov, actually his memory isn't necessary there. The monuments to the marshal of the Soviet Union Ivan Bagramyan, the glorified pilot, twice the Hero of the Soviet Union Nelson Stepanyan have been destroyed and the busts of graduates – the Heroes of the Soviet Union, including the general Sabir Rakhimov were taken down in school territory.   On January 7, 2011, the monument which has been established in 1981 was taken down by six bulldozers in the homeland of the hero. What for? Where is the logic here? As it turned out, there is the reason! The matter is that the public somehow suddenly was very much disturbed by historical memory of the Uzbek people. The scientists and different activists began to write about it in eager rivalry. The article which carries the remarkable name “the Mirror of our values” reflects better the essence of this campaign. It was written by Hayrula Muminov, the chairman of the citizens’ descent. He has informed, as it turned out, that the citizens discuss the necessity of returning of the historical name of Sabir-Rahimovsky district of the capital of Uzbekistan for fifteen years.   Mister Muminov explains, “The people say that the place name is its mirror. On the assumption of this, it would be expedient to name this district of our capital as Olmazorsky”. The word “olmazor” means the apple garden in Uzbek. So now there will be a green zone on a place of a monument to the general. Basically there will the apple-trees.   However, the monument to general Rakhimov hasn't disappeared at all – it, possibly to say, has moved. Also it is established now in Gafur Gulyam park. And it is very symptomatic: like as there was something in our history but it not the main thing – let takes a place which is necessary. Therefore in November 2010, the station of underground by the name of Sabir Rakhimov was renamed, giving it already familiar name of Olmazor. As mass-media informs, the streets in Tashkent and Urgench, already mentioned by us the lyceum and school will be shortly renamed.   Than by what "the iron" general hasn't pleased? Do you remember the professor Preobrazhensky told to doctor Bormental about “a bad heredity”. The similar heredity also was found out in general Rakhimov – he was ethnic Kazakh. On the assumption of the modern political realities, it is possible to name it as “not title ethnic origin”. It is the first minus.   The second minus was that he struggled with basmaches. The third minus is that he lived, unfortunately, in the Soviet period. And the fourth minus is that the general was at war in the Great Patriotic War and as it found out, there was no war of the Uzbek people. Here is, for example, how it was written about war in the history textbooks: it is called exclusively as the World War II and not as the Great Patriotic War. It was surprisingly noticed that Uzbekistan, as it turned out, was at war on the party of the USSR – it is funny even to comment this message. And one of the sites has such example: the fact of participation of the Uzbek national formations as a part of armies of the Third Reich was marked in the manual for the Uzbek officers as a positive example …   And if the war is not domestic and not clear what kind of it, so for what sake to remember about it?! Here they take down the monument to the Soviet soldier, rename the street in honor of the Hero of the Soviet Union, pilot Georgy Ivlev who was the native citizen of Tashkent, destroy the exhibition of warlike equipment of war time.   The history with a monument about the general Sabir Rakhimov should remain unnoticed. For example, in the next Kazakhstan where, by the way, a half-million of the Uzbeks live (in Uzbekistan it is about two million Kazakhs). It is necessary to recognize that the official relations between two next republics develop not so good. In such situation it is possible to keep silent or to state the position publicly. One of the deputies of mazhilis (the parliament of Kazakhstan) Amangeldy Momyshev has directed the deputy inquiry to the prime minister of republic. He considers that it is necessary to raise the question about the preservation of monuments and names in honor of general Rakhimov in Uzbekistan. Besides, the deputy has urged the authorities of Kazakhstan to establish the monuments to the Hero of the Soviet Union Sabir Rakhimov in Astana, Almaty and a number of frontier regions and to name the underground station, streets and schools by his name.   In far Izhevsk the local branch of LDPR has addressed with the letter to Vladimir Zhirinovsky. Its supporters mark, “Recently the acts of vandalism are constantly made in the post-Soviet territory countries! You can’t name it in another way!, …   In this connection we suggest to leave on the all-Russian level with the initiative of installation of an exact copy of a monument to Sabir Rakhimov in one of the Russian cities (probably in Moscow or Izhevsk) and to begin fund raising on realization of the given project.   We are ready to support this project in the territory of our republic in every possible way”.   So the memory of general Rakhimov is alive. There are people who remember his feat and who is interested in his nationality least of all. And as to an official position of the authorities of Uzbekistan, probably the comment of one of those who is excited with a shameful situation with eradication of memory of Sabir Rakhimov in this country will be the best answer to them, “The power of Uzbekistan has a short memory. The matter is not in general Rakhimov but in desire to forget the Soviet past. If to follow such logic, so it would be necessary to dismantle not the stone general but... whole city. It has been destroyed to the basis after the earthquake of 1966. And that was restored by all Soviet republics. What, guys, it is too difficult for you to dismantle a city?!»   There is a photo of a monument to general Rakhimov in the beginning of article. It looked like that. And here than it became...
