The congressman -democrat Jim McDermott submitted the bill “About democracy in Georgia” for colleagues consideration, providing the termination of the American help to this country in case the coming elections won't be fair there and if the same Ivanishvili and his party won’t be given the opportunity for full participation in pre-election fight.
So, the Americans, possibly, required nearly 4 years which have passed since “black” August of 2008th in order to understand that: Saakashvili's regime has nothing in common with democracy, not with human rights. As they say, better late than never... However, the dear congressman told nothing about, whether the deliveries of arms proceed further to Georgia if the rights of opposition so openly violated there? And, of course, the people of these countries don't wish the democracy spread by murder of the civilians in any way.
It is noted in a preamble of the bill that the authorities in power “even more often detain the members of political opposition and non-governmental organizations of civil society, limit the freedom of the press, undermine the rights of workers to creation (trade-union) organizations and conducting collective negotiations, interfere with oppositional groups in carrying out of demonstrations and often with the use of violent methods”.
McDermott has specified in separate press release that intends “to throw light on suppression amplifying in Georgia” of the dissent.
“I know that the Congressmen from both parties divide my growing concern concerning the pressing on political parties, non-governmental organizations and workers in Georgia”, added the American legislator.
As appears from the comment, the confirmation became the hearings on the candidate of the new American ambassador in Tbilisi Richard Norland, taken place recently in committee on foreign affairs of the Senate of the USA. In particular, the chairman of subcommittee on Europe Jeanne Shaheen expressed the firm confidence that “the advance of key interest (the USA) in long-term safety and stability of Georgia is directly connected with further advance by its government of democratic reforms”.
Senator Ben Cardin has emphasized that the American diplomats in Tbilisi should promote the creation of “as much as possible ample opportunities for opposition to conduct the effective competitive fight” on an equal footing.
The new ambassador, who is already confirmed, declared at hearings that carrying out of upcoming elections “according to standards of the countries of NATO” is in the opinion of the USA is “very important check”, “a litmus piece of paper” from the point of view of “aspirations of Georgia to the membership in NATO and our support of these expectations”.
According to Rogin, these statements “struck the observers” as “nobody from the officials of administration still directly didn't coordinate the carrying out of parliamentary elections to expectations of Georgia concerning NATO and didn't use the expression “a litmus piece of paper” for the description of such coordination”, reports ITAR-TASS.
