Vladimir Voronin: “We don't trust in the European Union any more...”

The ex-president of Moldova, the chairman of one of the largest parties of the country the Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova Vladimir Voronin acted on General Assembly “World without Nazism” in Strasbourg with the speech devoted to what occurs in the republic today:

- Today I’m with you with those who, contrary to sweet-voiced speeches about a final victory of democracy in Europe, firmly realize that the fascism recurrence in Europe is not the imaginary danger, but the reality of today. The reality embodied at times in graceful liberal dresses from the most modern democratic fashion designers, but not capable after all to hide the original essence from a skilled look. It is given out by the SS- boots splashed by blood.

Each of us already realizes two tragic truths on an example of own countries. The first of them is a clear fascist threat. The second is absolute unavailability of neither international, including the European institutes, not the public opinion of these countries to organize the effective opposition to memorably known and absolutely recognizable trouble.

I will give an example on my country, the Republic of Moldova. The country in which there were almost never serious interethnic conflicts in which today the household internationalism and surprising interfaith and interethnic tolerance dominates at level of mass consciousness.

And, nevertheless, the more and more distinct preconditions of fascistization today are formed in the Republic of Moldova. And unlike many other countries, these preconditions are formed from above, that is the power, with perfect connivance from the European organizations.

Someone, perhaps, will find these formulations too categorical. But before to pass to arguments, I would like to remind that fascism, and if to speak more precisely the Nazism appeared not at once to the world in shape of terrible pictures of Auschwitz, Khatyn, smoking ruins of Europe and the mullions-strong victims incinerated on fire of the Second World War. Let's remember: the Nazism arose at first simply as the political system in which it was allowed to hate the people of other nationality and races and it was allowed to destroy democratic freedoms and the rights of citizens under the pretext of fight against communism.

It is known that the Republic of Moldova tested on itself a double Nazi stranglehold in due time – in shape of the German fascism and in a form of Romanian fascism, associated with military criminal Ion Antonescu. More than 300 000 of Jews and more than 50 000 of Gipsy were purposefully destroyed in Moldova from 1941 to 1944. And it is not including all other citizens of Moldova, civilians, participants of anti-fascist resistance and underground. And it is not including more than 30 000 inhabitants of Bessarabia executed during 22 years of the Romanian occupation of the territory between Dniester and Prut.

Can you imagine that somewhere in modern Europe there is Adolf Hitler Street? I think that you can’t. But there is already the street in Kishinev in honour of the main organizer of a Holocaust in Moldova – Ion Antonescu. And this street appeared quite recently, by the efforts of one of political forces ruling now in Moldova – Democratic Party. It is two years to that event! But alas, it didn't become the European sensation. This “news” wasn’t noticeв at all.

Is it possible to present that in modern Europe any of the countries, for example Germany, suddenly declared that is going to reconsider the borders in the West in favour of that existed in a Third Reich after occupation of France? – It sounds, wildly! It sounds madly! But the president of Romania Traian Basescu already declares twice that is ready to repeat the notorious appeal of the same Ion Antonescu: “Romanians, I order you to pass Prut!”. The order which, by the way, sounded on June 22, 1941.

Did somebody from the present heard about any international scandal? Perhaps, the president of Romania scolded at least in the European press? Or Romania as the full member of EU was discussed at the next meeting of the European commission? – No! It was nothing similar.

May be because the specified examples actually are so insignificant and ordinary in comparison with all the rest that occurs in Moldova that it is possible not to pay attention on them.

Since 2009 the Republic of Moldova is headed by the so-called “Alliance for the European integration”. For last three years the standard of living sharply fell in the country and the number of supporters of the European integration decreased from 70 percent to 30. But all bosses of the European Union applaud the Moldavian power and call the last three years as “success history”.

At once I want to say: the power didn't spend during this time any reforms, neither liberal, nor anti-liberal, neither painful, nor populist. The only thing that continuously all this time does the power is the resolute attacks to the largest and most authoritative political pariah of the country – the Party of communists of the Republic of Moldova.

This determination, this “sturdiness” and “political courage” of this Alliance are a key to understanding of optimism sources of high European persons in estimates of present Moldavian board. EU allowed to do with communists everything, if only the unique experiment didn't repeat in my country when in the XXI century communists three times on parliamentary elections came to the government.

But it became clear very quickly that it is impossible to consult with communists, without having destroyed the democratic system of the country. And it was dismantled for only a few months. At first the leaders of ruling Alliance changed an electoral code and on the eve of parliamentary elections. Then they, without having elected the president during more than a year, didn't dismiss the parliament as it is demanded by the constitution and continued to govern. That is actually usurped the government. Then they closed the unique oppositional NIT television channel possessing the million audience.

Then they called the tragic day on April 7, 2009 as the day of freedom when the swells in vests with legionary, Nazi crosses burned down the Moldavian parliament. And three more years they fought against the Russian language, with its presence on television, press, education, closing the Russian schools one after another.

Then they forbade the communistic symbolic, having called it criminal and occupational, having allowed carrying out the legionary marches under slogans of association of Bessarabia and Romania in three largest cities of Moldova.

The circle became isolated. The Soviet power in Moldova began to be called as occupational only after the fascist revolution in Romania and Ion Antonescu's coming to power, that is since September 5, 1940. From June 28, 1940 to September 5 of the same year nobody in Romania could allow such himself, as Romania returned Bessarabia to the Soviet Union actually voluntary, by the decision of the government. Differently, today the communistic and Soviet symbols from political and ideological positions of the Romanian fascists are forbidden in the Republic of Moldova.

There is a fight with opposition, parliamentary party of communists with support on ideology of fascist dictator Ion Antonescu. The memorial complexes, military necropolises, that is everything that is connected with the Second World War, the architectural constructions containing specified symbolic are liable to destruction from the positions of those who started a Holocaust in Moldova, whose fault for perfect crimes is proved by the Nuremberg tribunal.

I wouldn't like to put the rhetorical questions again now: where the official Europe looks? Why it participates in it?

Why, when the speech is about Russophobia and anticommunism authorization, the official Europe acts the same as it acted at the time of the Munich arrangement? – Moldova doesn’t interest in the answers to these questions any more. We don't believe in such objective arbitrator any more which could be the European Union.

We only know that the vast majority of citizens of the Republic of Moldova are on our party, on the party of original anti-fascists today. And this majority full of desires to restore in Moldova the democracy, the rule of law and the real European values – values of freedom, equality and a brotherhood.

And in this fight we need the sincere allies for whom both the European conceit, and mentor lectures about civilization inferiority of the states and the people being to the East from the Carpathians are alien.

We need the allies who uncompromisingly fight for spirit and a letter of the democratic freedoms clearly realizing what will be the price of refusal. And I believe that I am among such allies now.

And I would like to finish my performance by the translation of the famous poem of German pastor Martin Niemoller “When they came”.

Yes, this poem became today extremely widely known, it is constantly quoted, remember the author. And it is very eloquent symptom of an era in own way too. But it is better to remember these words of the fearless anti-fascist more often and then, perhaps, his sad prophecy won't be come true in the new millennium.

“When Nazis came for communists,

I was silent, I am not a communist.

Then they came for social democrats,

I was silent, I am not social democrat.

Then they came for trade-union figures,

I was silent, I am not the member of trade union.

Then they came for Jews,

I was silent, I am not Jew.

And then they came for me and there was nobody who could protest any more”.
