Christopher Coker: NATO was simply lucky in Kosovo!
The known British political scientist and philosopher Christopher Coker has visited recently Russia. Having answering the questions after the lecture “the World order: what has changed after September, 11”, he has made rather curious recognition when told about today of the NATO block:
- I regret to what organization NATO have turned. Certainly, it is not that organization which is capable to carry out the war. It is simply incapable of it. The example of Libya: it is simply disgrace that has occurred! The so-called most powerful alliance in the world can't cope with the shabby dictator …
We were simply lucky too in Kosovo – after all couldn't put any essential damage of the Serbian army. We were lucky for two reasons. The first is Russia. It has decided that it is all has already bothered and has put the pressure upon Milosevic. The second is a change of a target. Instead of hitting the Serbian army, we have started to hit the casino and hotels. And it was the private property of those people who supported Milosevic. A mafia as a matter of fact …
They haven't been interested in Kosovo, in the program of Great Serbia. They weren't nationalists and have no deal with the Serbian history. They gave a damn about it – they were interested only in money. And they supported Milosevic because they earned this money with his help.
And here the sanctions were imposed: they couldn't take away the money from the accounts in foreign banks. Also couldn't travel outside of Serbia. Then they have told to Milosevic: it is enough, get out of Kosovo, because your leaving is in our interests. As a matter of fact, the political support of Milosevic has ended – he has lost the power a year later.
And we in the West have simply forgotten how we were lucky in 1999. Otherwise we have failed in Kosovo too.
