Actions of the European politicians on “Maidan” are open provocation against legitimate authority of Ukraine

The political scientist, the director of the Kiev Centre of Political Researches and Conflictology Mikhail Borisovich Pogrebinsky answers the questions of «The world and we» of participation of the European politicians in protest performances in Kiev.

— What impact does the external factor of pressure have from the West on a course of protest actions in Ukraine?

It is obvious that reaction of the European politicians that now occurs in Ukraine has the nature of provocation. They actually push people who doubt to go or not to go on «Maidan», as soon as possible to join it. And all these European politicians infinitely repeat the same mantra that the people of Ukraine are for association signing, for Europe, but not with Russia at all, that the majority is for the European choice and the power refuses this decision. It means that, allegedly, Europe and the western politicians support all people, except the power.

All this looks beautifully and democratically. And actually it is the frank lie. The Ukrainian people are divided approximately in half according to the polls which are authentically carried out by independent structures. The latest data of poll of the Kiev international institute of sociology in two weeks prior to the summit in Vilnius showed that 38% would like to join movement in the European Union and 38% support movement in the Customs Union. It just also shows all cynicism of that speak and as the European politicians act. They come to the Maidan, support the present people there, obviously, provoking to remain there further. Recently we heard statements of the head of State Department who being in Kishinev who told that the majority of the people in Ukraine is for Europe. But it is the lie provoking a situation.

Mrs. Noland, the assistant of the Secretary of State, acted too and told that Ukraine, actually, has no choice — it has to sign association with Europe. It seems to me that after such statements it is advisable to make the decision on a ban on entry into Ukraine concerning this «madam» as it is the most real, barefaced provocation. Therefore the influence of Europeans and Americans is extremely destructive that occur there. And I not really understand, on what they count. Because if the situation will develop in that course in which they claim, so everything will end that a half of Ukraine will simply ignore any attempts of eurointegration in the future.

— What is the purpose of this strategy which is advanced so persistently by the western politicians? How far this «Maidan» scenario can come? May it go on the Libyan or Egyptian way?

As they have no clear plan, is it possible to speak about their purposes? They make any absolutely unrealizable demands — government and president resignation. But there are no bases for this purpose. And there are bases only to find guilty and provokers and to punish them — from one and other hand. And the members of «Berkut» who exceeded the powers, and provokers who provoked this «war» which put mutilations to militiamen. It is obvious, and it should be made. But what can be a conversation on resignation of the government and extraordinary parliamentary elections?!

— Can the authorities in power be able to resist to these processes, probably, with support of Russia?

It seems to me that support of Russia has to be that it has to offer Ukraine the expansion of economic cooperation to restore commodity turnover between our countries that people got a job. It will be extremely significant support from Russia.

As for the power while it controls a situation. But it is clear that such situation as today can’t long proceed. Because capture of the building has to be resolved or revolution since it is a revolution element — an exit for the constitutional field, or they have to leave these buildings. Thus obviously, that option of succession of events is supported by Americans who speak — don’t force out them from buildings — they fight for democracy.
