The English-speaking site petition in support of the Latvian aliens is opened
“One of the most unfair and divided societies in the European Union is in Latvia”, told on the English-speaking site www.noncitizens.eu opened by the Congress of noncitizens after discussions with the British lawyers, journalists and political scientists.
The main page of a site is supplied with a preamble: “As a result of injustice of the Latvian Law on nationality about 300 000 noncitizens belonging to ethnic minority are deprived of many basic rights which the citizens of other member states of the European Union use.
The noncitizens can't stand to political positions or vote on national, local and European elections, their right to a freedom of movement, employment and ownership of land is limited. The law also limits their right to use the language in the private and public sphere, in the field of education, business and mass media. There are more than 33 categories of a ban on work in public institutions and service in armed forces and police”.
On www.noncitizens.eu any wishing is offered to sign the petition with an appeal to the government of Latvia to revise the Law on nationality and to return the full opportunity to participate in democratic process to noncitizens as all citizens of the countries of the European Union.
The situation is made comments by the board member of the Congress of noncitizens, the lawyer Elizaveta Krivtsova: “After the first visit of delegation of the Congress of noncitizens to European Parliament it became clear that Europeans are shocked often by the status of the person of the second grade fixed by the law, and they would like to support us somehow. The petition is a simple and effective way to pay attention of European Commission and European Parliament that partially and from their consent exists in Europe and already there was constants a special status of the noncitizen, allowing to deprive the part of the population of the political rights.
At present Latvia draws attention of the European press in connection with the entry into the European zone, realization of drastic measures of economy and preparation for the presidency in EU. Our task is to achieve that the problem of mass statelessness became one of obligatory subjects which remember speaking about Latvia”, notes Elizaveta Krivtsova.
On June 1, 2013 by the invitation of the Congress of noncitizens Latvia was visited by the international delegation among which there were British lawyers, journalists and assistants to deputies of the British and European parliaments. Experts were revolted deeply by a form of political lawlessness practised in Latvia. As a result of the subsequent discussions the Congress of noncitizens came to a conclusion that the problem of noncitizens can be brought to the European level and to draw attention not only of professional human rights activists, but also simple Europeans.
