There was “Georgia” and there will be “Georgia”! The name “Georgia” was offered for some reason alternatively to “Georgia” but not the country self-name in the Georgian language “Sakartvelo”.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Grigol Vashadze, who is full of good intentions, declared about the determination to eradicate the present name of the country. Vashadze has declared in Vilnius where he has arrived with working visit and where this theme, certainly, was discussed, “I will destroy the term “Georgia”, promise you. And not only in Lithuania”. The Minister has proved the ideas … In his opinion it turns out very badly, when his democratic country is named by “the Russian word borrowed from the Turkish language”. And the renaming process have been started …

The joyful message has come from South Korea where they have agreed to change the name of Georgia. The deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Nino Kalandadze has declared about it with undisguised pleasure. Now they will be guided by the English-speaking name “Georgia” in Seoul. The Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is full of optimism, has addressed with the official written request in many countries “to change the state name “Georgia” and officially to call the country the English name “Georgia”.

They have addressed to one of the most developed states of the world, namely to Japan. Probably, calculation was that the neighbor of Russia, applying for a part of its territory, namely the Kuril Islands, will use the first possibility once again with pleasure to designate once again the accessory to the “civilized” world where, as it is known, speak not in Russian, but in English. However, there was a present discomfiture: Japan has refused request to change the official name of Georgia in Japanese language. The department of the Central Asia and the Caucasus of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan has informed about it.
The representative of department has politely explained that this question isn't considered by the government of Japan. In order to change the foreign country name officially, it is necessary to make amendments to the legislation …
The request of Georgia haven't supported and there, where, apparently, should support if to mean only a policy. The state commission on language in Lithuania has come to a conclusion that there is no necessity to change the traditional name of Georgia in the Lithuanian language. As it became known, the commission didn't begin to discuss the offer of the authorities of Georgia at all … Committee-men have noticed that renaming would mention also other concepts, for example, “Georgian” or “Georgian language”.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Audronius Azubalis has explained that he intends to adhere to advices of linguists and those don't recommend to change the name of Georgia at all, “I am very careful in linguistic questions. I always try to observe the advices of our known linguists”. In general, it is not by a policy alone …

By the way, about the new name. It is not actually the new one at all. But, it is possible to say, it is consecrated by democratic tradition. The state in the southeast of the USA was named as Georgia. It was the fourth state which has signed the Constitution of the United States in 1788. But the name was given by the Englishmen... They have made it in 1724 in honor of the king George I. Probably he was the big democrat too… Anyway madam Kalandadze has announced on the whole world, “We consider that should continue the initiative that all foreign states named our country in the future as “Georgia” instead of “Georgia”.

Let's add only that the English-speaking name of Georgia is Georgia which is completely identical to the name of one of the American states and became an occasion to any funny hacks not for the first time. So the case received a wide popularity when during a confrontation of Russia and Georgia, caused by aggression of the last to South Ossetia, one of the inhabitants of the State of Georgia, having heard to the latest news, has decided that intrusion of the Russian armies threatens her native state …

But if they have solved, so have solved! Also it is possible even to develop the deep patriotic idea further. Though, it doesn’t welcome in the world. But if to change the hymn?! And it is not necessary to invent something - it is possible simply to borrow the hymn of the State of Georgia. This song, written by a certain Howard Carmichael, carries the approaching name: “Georgia On My Mind”. Though, it is not actually devoted to the state, but the girl by name of Georgia. But it doesn’t matter – the main thing is that everything will be correct. Democratically! And it is not so important that nobody was interested in the opinion of inhabitants of Georgia …
